These things being said, most likely you’re still asking the question, why measurement? The New Zealand education department, at their website, zmaths, this question is answered and described. Their answer is pretty much in line with the Texas curriculum. First off, measurements helps us quantify the world around. In a lot of ways, the word “quantify” means “describe.” We use tools like rulers, thermometers, and scales to “quantify” things. Measurements help us to understand our world. Measurements also links the different strands of mathematics, Geometry, Trigonometry, Algebra, and Calcululus, these may be high school and possibly College curriculums, however, the elementary and middle school years are prerequisites to understanding these concepts, because the Texas education system should have as its overall goal, high school graduation. Measurement also links math to other subjects, such as Science, Art, Sports, and Music. Sports? You might asks? Well, consider this picture. We have the Blue Team and the White Team. The Blue Team has possession of the ball, and as we can see the quarterback is getting ready to take a snap. The picture means a little bit, but let’s add these measurements to it. It is 4th down and 5 yards, on the White 43 yard line. It’s the fourth quarter, 3 minutes and 53 seconds left in the game. The score is a Blue 42, White 45. Now, with these measurement, we can begin to see that there’s a lot of emotion and a lot of drama that surrounds this particular picture based upon our knowledge of math measurement. And in conclusion, on this question of why measurement? Measurement helps us with the calculations of speed, acceleration and overcoming the law of gravity – knowledge that helps us to shoot a rocket into space.
