TEKS Geometry and Measurement Avatar 2

Rozean:

So how's it going? I hope everything's cool, and maybe you’re feeling a bit better about Measurement, but you're probably wondering, why Geometry. Well for one thing, we live in a world that is full of Geometry. Check on this video.

[que 3-D world video]

Rozean:

We live in a 3-D world. A world that we step out into, and walk through, and explore. We have to come to grips with using Geometry to interact with out world “every minute of the day.” We need to know about shapes, because they’re pare of the ordinary daily interaction with out world, as we wake up, getting ready for school, come back home, enjoy the view, or ride our bike. Geometry is probably a big part of our everyday vocabulary with common objects such as squares, rectangles, circles, cubes and prism and an infinite variety of shapes in our reality. Our world view can be very different for each of us, knowledge of Geometry helps to breed diversity and appreciation for our world.

Rozean:

Also in our world position is very important. Where you're going, what time you got to be there, when do you have to return, and sometimes just figuring out where you are at the moment you might be lost. Did you know that there are satellites that help us do these things. They are called global positioning systems (or GPS). Some of them even tell you step by step how to get to an unfamiliar location, for example, a new hobby store that has the parts you need for your new model rocket! Art is also very related to Geometry. Symmetry is beautiful. Do you have a favorite wallpaper or pattern? Dance is another example of symmetry. It is balanced, rhythmic and very geometric. Finally consider the famous artist MC Escher.

Rozean:

A lot of people have been talking about him for some time. He was able to make paintings with a very unusual Geometry. Pause the video and examine this painting and see how weird it really is. Did you know that geometry was one of the first abstract treatments of mathematics? What that means is that in 300 B.C a philosopher named Euclid was able to explain many types of shapes and figures, laid the groundwork for what we know about Geometry in his book was named the Elements. “Abstract” means nouns that can’t be detected by the 5 senses, such as love, beauty, and happiness. For example, he a line in Geometry is imagined to go on forever in both directions. How about that? Here is a copy of Euclid’s book.

Rozean:

Spatial thinking goes back to the 3-D world described earlier in the video. The three dimensions are up, down, left and right…1…2….3…..respectively. Spatial thinking is very important to science and scientist. They use the characteristics of things to classify them, by color, shape, height, width and so on. Scientist also use logic, and going back to Euclid, he designed a process of logical proof that is related to the scientific method, which you may have heard about in science books. Have you ever thought amount the Emojis you use when you talk with friends? If you look closely, a lot of them are made up of some very simple Geometry shapes, and through that combination of shapes, they communicate a lot about things going on with you and your friends.

Geometry is our world, whether you like it or not, I hope you begin to like it, because you’ll be better off for it…hope you enjoyed the video.
