From Long Division to Desmos: Bridging Old and New School Polynomial Methods

In this video, we explore how old school algebra techniques and new school technology can work together to deepen understanding of polynomial factoring and rational roots. We use classic paper-and-pencil methods like long division, the Rational Root (or p/q) Theorem, and factoring by grouping, all scaffolded by the free, beautiful Desmos graphing calculator at https://www.desmos.com/calculator. We begin old school, using polynomial long division to find a factor of a polynomial from partial information and then factoring further by hand. Along the way, we use Desmos to visualize the graph, confirm where a root appears, and verify that our factorization matches the polynomial’s behavior.
Next, we introduce the Rational Root Theorem (the p/q theorem) as another old school tool for finding possible rational zeros. We use a Desmos graph to make an educated “guess” at a root, then perform polynomial long division to peel off a linear binomial factor. After that, we continue factoring the remaining quadratic factor fully by hand, while repeatedly checking our work against the Desmos graph to ensure the algebra and the visual picture line up. We also tackle third-degree polynomials using factoring by grouping, illustrating a clear example of a purely old school factoring method. Here again, technology becomes a support: we use Desmos to check that the grouped factors really match the original cubic and to see how the roots show up on the graph. Finally, we look at an alternate “guess and check” style approach—what I call the Rozean method—for finding rational roots. This method is designed to feel like less guess and more check, making the search for roots more systematic and less random, and it does not rely on long division to verify each step.
Desmos and careful algebra work together here to streamline the process and make each guess feel more informed.
